In a major development to boost religious tourism and improve pilgrim facilities, the Uttarakhand government has announced plans to develop the Yamunotri pedestrian trek on the lines of the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir. The initiative aims to provide better amenities and a safer journey for devotees visiting the revered Yamunotri Dham, one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas.
According to officials, the 6-km trek from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri will be equipped with various facilities including rain shelters, restrooms, fire tender points, snack kiosks, and health assistance units. Drawing inspiration from the successful model of the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route, the plan is designed to cater to lakhs of pilgrims who visit the shrine annually, especially during the Char Dham Yatra season.
Dr. Meherban Singh Bisht, Managing Director of the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN), stated that the project will include the construction of a reception center, rain shelters along the route, and improved sanitation and medical services. “We are committed to developing the Yamunotri trek into a safe, clean, and pilgrim-friendly route much like the Vaishno Devi pathway,” said Dr. Bisht.
In addition to Yamunotri, the government is also focusing on improving facilities at the Gangotri Dham. As part of the plan, four rain shelter sheds will be constructed at key points—Bhairav Ghati, Surya Kund, Gauri Kund, and near the helipad—to ensure that pilgrims can take shelter during inclement weather. Basic facilities like clean drinking water, seating areas, and toilets will be provided at these points.
This initiative is expected to not only improve the overall pilgrimage experience but also ensure safety and convenience in a region that often faces unpredictable weather and landslide risks.
Tourism officials believe this step will significantly enhance the state’s image as a safe and welcoming religious destination. Work on the project is set to begin soon under the supervision of the tourism and public works departments.
As the Char Dham Yatra continues to draw increasing numbers of pilgrims each year, such infrastructural upgrades are seen as crucial to manage footfall and ensure a spiritually enriching yet physically comfortable journey.
