New Delhi, July 2025 – In a major policy update, Indian Railways has officially capped the price of vegetarian meals served onboard trains at ₹80, reaffirming transparency and affordability in catering services across the network. The Ministry of Railways made this publicly available via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, alongside assurances regarding meal contents and hygiene standards (PUNE PULSE – Trusted-Connected-Targeted).
The decision follows widespread complaints regarding inconsistent pricing and unauthorized vendors overcharging passengers—often leading to confusion and exploitation. Under the new directive, the set ₹80 onboard rate includes a 350-gram Veg Biryani box served with curd, pickle, a biodegradable spoon, tissue paper, and a hand sanitizer. Meanwhile, the walking-rate at railway stations has been capped at ₹70 (PUNE PULSE – Trusted-Connected-Targeted).
The packaged vegetarian meal is intended to encourage uniformity and curb the exploitative practices that prevailed—especially on long-distance journeys. The Ministry clearly stated that if any vendor demands an amount higher than the fixed rate or omits any included item, passengers should refuse payment and lodge a complaint. Complaints can be filed via the Rail Madad helpline (dial 139), the official Rail Madad portal, or the Ministry’s social media handles (PUNE PULSE – Trusted-Connected-Targeted).
The announcement echoes the text featured in a popular CNBC Awaaz post, which emphasized that “Now train passengers will get tasty and nutritious vegetarian food for just ₹80!” This image-based message reflects the new directive and underscores the commitment to standardized pricing and improved service quality.
Industry experts and consumer advocates have welcomed the move, highlighting the importance of affordability and hygiene in public transport catering. The meal standard is expected to improve accountability among contractors and reduce grievances from travellers.
Travelers are also advised to insist on the printed bill and verify all components before accepting service. Accurate billing is a mandatory part of IRCTC’s policy, designed to deter unauthorized price hikes and ensure compliance across the railway’s vast catering operations.
This change is a significant step toward rebuilding passenger trust in onboard food services. As the railway ministry continues to enhance catering transparency, passengers across India stand to benefit from consistent fares, fixed meal compositions, and safer, more hygienic travel experiences.
