Srivilliputtur, Tamil Nadu – June 27, 2025:
The sacred town of Srivilliputtur is resounding with divine fervor as the annual Periyalwar Brahmotsavam has officially commenced at the historic Srivilliputtur Andal Temple. The festival commenced with the sacred Dwajarohanam (flag hoisting) ceremony, marking the formal inauguration of the vibrant celebrations in honor of Sri Periyalwar, the revered Vaishnavite saint and one among the twelve Alwars.
The Dwajarohanam took place early in the morning amid the chanting of Vedic hymns and traditional music, drawing thousands of devotees and visitors from across Tamil Nadu and beyond. The temple priests hoisted the Garuda flag, marking the divine invitation to the deities and celestial beings to witness and bless the festivities.
The Brahmotsavam spans several days, featuring a series of vahana sevas (processions), cultural performances, and special rituals. Each day is marked by a different vehicle (vahanam) on which the utsava murthi (festival idol) of Periyalwar is taken in a grand procession around the temple streets. These include the Silver Garuda Vahanam, Hamsa Vahanam, Simha Vahanam, and more, offering a visual treat and a deeply spiritual experience for the devotees.
This festival is celebrated in the Tamil month of Aani (June–July) to commemorate the Aani Swathi star, believed to be the birth star of Periyalwar. The highlight of the festival will be the Garuda Seva and the Sathumurai on the final day, where thousands gather to witness the grandeur and offer their heartfelt prayers.
Security and arrangements have been efficiently managed by temple authorities with the support of the local administration. Special queues, drinking water facilities, and free food distribution (annadanam) have been organized for devotees.
The atmosphere in Srivilliputtur is one of joy, devotion, and celebration, as the town honors one of its greatest spiritual sons through this age-old tradition.
