Murudeshwar, Karnataka – June 2025:
In a significant move aimed at preserving the sanctity and cultural decorum of the temple premises, authorities at the famous Murudeshwar Temple in Karnataka have implemented a strict dress code for devotees. The decision, which came into effect following an official notice issued by temple authorities on Monday, emphasizes the importance of traditional and respectful attire while visiting the revered temple.
According to the new directive, male devotees must wear either a traditional dhoti (locally known as panche) or full-length formal trousers. This move is seen as part of a broader effort to maintain the spiritual and cultural ambiance of the temple, which is not only a place of worship but also a prominent tourist attraction due to its iconic 123-feet tall Shiva statue and majestic coastal setting.
Women, on the other hand, are expected to wear traditional Indian attire such as sarees, salwar kameez, or other modest, full-length dresses. The notice discourages the wearing of modern or revealing outfits such as shorts, miniskirts, or sleeveless tops within the temple premises.
Temple authorities stated that this decision was made after observing a growing trend of inappropriate clothing worn by visitors, which they believe undermines the sanctity of the space. “Temples are sacred places that deserve respect in every way — including how one dresses,” an official from the Murudeshwar Temple Management Committee said.
Officials have also placed signboards at multiple entry points and have deployed volunteers to ensure the new guidelines are followed. Devotees are urged to follow the newly introduced dress code guidelines.
