Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh – June 26, 2025
The historic Indrakeeladri temple, dedicated to the revered Sri Kanaka Durga Devi, is witnessing rapid development as the Andhra Pradesh government moves forward with a detailed master plan focused on enhancing infrastructure and safeguarding temple properties. According to the Endowments Minister, efforts are underway to secure Central government support under the PRASAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive) scheme.
The Indrakeeladri hill, situated on the banks of the Krishna River in Vijayawada, is one of the most sacred Shakti Peethas in South India. Every year, the temple attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees, with the highest footfall occurring during the Navaratri and Dasara celebrations. However, concerns regarding inadequate facilities, encroachment of temple lands, and lack of a structured development approach have persisted over the years.
In a recent statement, the Endowments Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing temple infrastructure while ensuring the sanctity and heritage of the site are maintained. “We are working on a detailed master plan that will address both spiritual and infrastructural needs. This includes improving access roads, pilgrim amenities, parking facilities, and land protection measures,” the Minister said.
The PRASAD scheme, launched by the Union Ministry of Tourism, aims to develop and promote religious tourism in India by creating state-of-the-art infrastructure around important pilgrimage sites. Officials hope that inclusion under this scheme will bring much-needed central funds to fast-track various developmental projects at the temple.
A key aspect of the current initiative is the protection of temple lands from illegal encroachments. Special teams have reportedly been formed to survey, document, and reclaim lands belonging to the temple trust. Legal measures are also being pursued to protect temple assets from further encroachment.
Devotees and local residents have welcomed the renewed focus on the temple’s development. With strategic planning and coordinated efforts between the state and central governments, the Sri Kanaka Durga Temple is expected to emerge as a model pilgrimage site blending tradition with modern infrastructure.
