Puri, Odisha – July 7, 2025:
The holy city of Puri witnessed a spectacular spiritual celebration as thousands of devotees gathered for the auspicious occasion of Sonar Besha and Bahuda Ratha Yatra, integral parts of the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra festival.
Bahuda Yatra, meaning the “Return Car Festival,” marks the return journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra from the Gundicha Temple to the Shri Jagannath Temple after a nine-day stay. Amid rhythmic chants, devotional songs, and the beating of traditional drums, the three grand chariots—Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana—slowly made their way through the Bada Danda (Grand Road), pulled by throngs of devotees eager for divine blessings.
The spiritual highlight of the return journey was the divine Sonar Besha or Suna Besha, which took place a day after the deities returned to their original abode. During this ritual, the idols of the Lords were adorned with exquisite gold ornaments, creating a divine spectacle of unmatched grandeur. The deities were displayed in their dazzling golden attire atop their respective chariots, drawing an ocean of devotees to catch a glimpse of this rare and sacred darshan.
The Sonar Besha is believed to have been introduced by King Kapilendra Deva in the 15th century after a victorious military campaign. To this day, it remains a symbol of divine royalty and spiritual prosperity. Priests conducted elaborate rituals and offered special prayers during the adornment, while security personnel and volunteers ensured smooth crowd management.
Despite the massive turnout, the event proceeded in a peaceful and orderly manner, with devotees expressing deep joy and fulfillment. Many described the experience as spiritually uplifting, especially witnessing Lord Jagannath in his radiant golden form.
The celebrations concluded with chants of “Jai Jagannath!” echoing through the city, leaving a lingering aura of devotion and divine presence. The successful conduct of Bahuda Yatra and Sonar Besha once again reinforced Puri’s status as a timeless spiritual center and a living embodiment of India’s rich cultural and religious heritage.
